On April 19 - 28, 2023, a series of events of the Research Workshop on Experimental Music that belongs to a project “The Climate of Sound” were organized in Hanoi. The Firefly Center in collaboration with the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology, and Faculty of Music - Goldsmiths University (London, UK) under the sponsorship of British Council Vietnam through UK/Vietnam Season 2023 Collaboration Grant initiated and organized this program.

Researchers of the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology participated in the workshop as main members. They had opportunities to study Vietnam’s experimental music through the lectures given by researchers and practitioners of experimental music in the UK and Vietnam. The lectures were Overview of Experimental Music in Vietnam and the world, trends of music research from the humane aspects in the world today; theory and practice of ethnomusicological flm-making, and so on. In addition, researchers also took part in the ethnomusicological flm screenings; performances of experimental music and meeting with artists who practiced the experimental music creativity at home and abroad, thus the researchers could link and experience directly this musical form.

On the basis of knowledge gained from a series of events, researchers built and shared researches, flm-making trailers on the aspects of experimental music. Articles and flms of researchers will be selected to present in the conference within the framework of Hanoi New Music Festival organized next December.

Te project awakened the interest of the community of Vietnamese researchers in experimental music. This was a central premise for the research of this musical genre in Vietnam in future. The project’s success contributed to provide inspiration, further development and passion for artists who work with experimental music in Vietnam today.
